The shoulder is a very mobile joint and because of this mobility is
prone to injury. When pushing, pulling, reaching and swinging our arms
the shoulder joint is used. Even simple tasks like getting dressed in
the morning involves use of the shoulder.
Because it is used so much, and because it is so complex, the shoulder
is often injured. Problems with the shoulder can happen over time with
use or due to a sudden injury. Fortunately your orthopaedic surgeon
can provide relief from the symptoms caused by a shoulder injury.
Impingement
This ailment is usually caused by repeatedly reaching overhead to perform
tasks. Shoulder movement can become limited by swollen tissue, torn
soft tissue, or possibly some bone overgrowth in the area of the rotator
cuff and bursa. Trimming and/or shaving the damaged tissue can help
open up the space making it easier for the joint to move.
Instability
An ailment in the shoulder caused when the shoulder is forced beyond
its normal range. This can cause the capsule and labrum to pull away
from the socket.
Torn Rotator Cuff
The rotator cuff is made up of muscles and tendons that attach the upper
arm to the shoulder. When the shoulder becomes painful it is usually
an indication of a problem with the rotator cuff. These problems can
include overuse, impingement, calcification deposits and /or tears.
Tears result in shoulder pain, weakness, and a loss of normal movement.
Recovery can include physical therapy, medication and sometimes surgery.
